7 months in Education House and I've been...

February: Followed by some guy who looked really suspicious up to level 6 and then he disappeared. I ran straight to my room and locked my door, called the management and a few minutes later they showed up with 2 police officers. They said the guy used to cause a lot of trouble and it was the right thing to call them.

Feb-March?: Zaty called and told me about the person who committed suicide on the stairs of Edu House during the summer. I wasn't prepared for it. Haha. I couldn't sleep for 2 nights.

March?: Stucked in the elevator. I was on the 6th floor and wanted to go down but the lift went up instead and just stopped. It was weird because Edu house only has 6 floors. Jo came and rescued me. She opened the door from the outside and let me out. Thanks!

July: My smoke alarm went off without any reasons. I had to take it down and was without any smoke alarm for 2 weeks.

August: Rearranged my room. I feel happier now. I should have done it earlier.

Can't remember exactly when but: The fire alarm went off around 1 a.m and it was raining and everyone thought it was just a drill but it wasn't. There was no fire though, there was just something wrong with the circuit I think. I can't remember.

Croissants yum!

Konon-konon nak ban myself from having any chocolates for the next four weeks, but this morning I went down to the foyer and got myself a twin pack of snickers from the vending machine. Tak tahan cabaran langsung. I wasn't even hungry or craving for any chocolates, but I ate it anyway. I also went to NW metro this morning because I felt like having croissants for breakfast and I like the ones from NW. I could have just bought one, but I bought three instead, and a bunch of other stuff that I think I need.

I think it's because of the approaching Ramadhan. I want to eat everything I can while I still can. Entah. Or maybe sebab mengada-ngada. Or sebab stress.

Mom is sending me my baju raya soon and she already pesan not to gain weight takut tak muat baju.

Malaysian night is tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'm excited about it or not. Maybe because I don't have anything new to wear. I'm going to look so plain tomorrow!

I really need to start doing my powerpoint presentation. So far, I've only done the title. Haha

Later.

Because I made the stupid decision to stuff myself with fried chicken and chips in the middle of the night, I shall punish myself by banning myself from having any chocolates for the next 4 weeks.

I called Hidayah last night. I really miss her, it's been a while since we talked like that. I remembered back then we used to call each other every single day, sometimes just to say what we were doing.

Thanks dear.
Love you loads!

"But onward we move; time does not stop to let us figure out what is wrong with us, or to go back and undo damage, it just moves on" -Crawford, V. (2002)

Romeo romeo where art thou romeo?

Romeo and Juliet (the ballet) that I went to see two nights ago with Zaty was quite disappointing. After looking forward to see it for weeks, it didn't meet my expectation at all. There were too many people on stage doing too many different things that I didn't know which one to focus on. I was afraid that if I didn't pay attention to all of them that I wouldn't understand the story. I think the ballet was a bit rough, it wasn't as graceful as I thought it should be. I also wish Romeo had put on tighter pants, that could have helped me stay more alert during the show. I think I dozed off a few times except for the last part of the show, when they made love. Haha! Since it was my first time watching ballet, it was hard for me to figure out what they were trying to say. The costumes were also a bit too much, I think. Oh and the ballet was too long! It went on for 3 hours with 3 fifteen minutes break. I guess I'm not much of a ballet person. I think I prefer musicals, like Puteri Gunung Ledang the musical that I went to see when I was back in college.

Earlier that day, I went out shopping with Alex. We haven't seen each other for quite some time so it was really nice to see her again! It was really fun, we had lunch at Astoria down Lambton Quay (I think that is what the cafe's called) and then went shopping. Alex bought this cool jacket that I think looks really good on her! I would have bought one myself too if only it wasn't so expensive. We also bought a few other things and then we hung out for a bit at my place before she went back around 5 p.m.

Oh and later that night, I went to the common room and Zaty was there with a few other edu people. We were bored so we decided to get our tummy filled and off we went to Hadi Gari at 12 a.m! Peachy and Sarah came with us. Since it was a Saturday night, the town was packed with people. We came back at about 2 a.m and I went straight to bed after that :)

Pictures

I woke up this morning and suddenly I felt like decorating my wall. So, I went through some photos on my laptop, chose the ones that I want to print out, went to warehouse stationary, and printed it out for 19cents each.

After I got the photos, I went to Pak n Save and Halal butcher with Zaty...she wanted to get some meat because she's making dinner tonight. :) After we got back, I made lunch and we ate together... and then we watched Tristan and Isolde. I don't know if I like the movie or not, it's quite depressing...

What else have I been doing since the mid sem break? The girls and I went out for coffee a few nights ago and then to the beach at 10.30 pm! It was super cold! And then the next day we went to the botanical garden and had cekodok there. I went to Dressmart yesterday by train! I wish the journey was longer... :)

That's all for now I guess. I'm just too lazy to update. Posting photos is much easier.

I'll write more interesting stuff when I'm in the mood.
:-)

Oh try listening to the song that I put on my blog. It's currently my favourite song...it's from PS I love you. I watched it a two nights ago with the girls. :)

Truth is...

... I love dancing. I love going to practice every evening even if I have assignments due that week. I don't mind at all. I'm not good at it, but I do enjoy it a lot. It takes my mind off things...things I want to run away from...things I don't want to deal with. I don't mind going up those endless stairs just to get to Uni for my dance practice...I actually love those stairs...I don't mind that they don't pay me to do any of this, because what is important is that I'm having fun...the experience that I get is priceless...

Cinderella

I just found out in today's lecture that Cinderella actually wore fur slippers and not glass slippers like what I've been told since I was young.

Now, fur slippers make so much more sense.

La di da...

I gave my room a total make over just now. I suddenly felt like I needed a change. I can now use my laptop on my desk, yay! I think the room looks nicer now.

A few more times and I'll be a pro!

I'm in the library right now...i have been since 8.30 a.m this morning. I've been trying to do my LALS assignment but I can't seem to find the books that I need. Honestly, I think the assignments for LALS are all ridiculous. What they're asking for are things that people don't really argue about. There are not enough books in the library to even do the assignments! I love listening to the lectures but when it comes to the assignments, I give up!

On a different story,

We decided to part ways. It's going to take a while for me to be OK again. I'm going to go back to the life that I had before he came and after Wan left. I'm going to keep myself busy with Uni and dance practice. I'm going to start taking my walks alone around town again. I'm going rent DVDs and watch it like it's nobody's business. I'm going to cook and probably learn how to knit from Laila. I might just pierce my bellybutton, just because I can.

Jo sent me a text this morning saying,

"Good morning. It's a beautiful day today"

and it really made me smile! Thank you, you've made my day dear!
You've always been there for me and I'm really lucky to have you as one of my closest friend. I hope I've been the same to you. I love you Jo! (and of course, Zaty and Shufaiha too!)

SO FAR, YOU'VE LET ME DOWN, 2008.

Dear Year 2008,

I know we've only known each other for a day, and we both could not tell yet how this relationship will go, but I just want to thank you for making the first day so fun! I woke up so early this morning because I was so eager to spend the first day with you! I am looking forward to the next 12 months with you. Please make my year fun and exciting, okay? Please make Uni life easy for me, and please make me a better person... I have so many plans with you and I hope I get to do it all :)

I know we'll have so much fun! I have a good feeling about this 2008! :)

Love,
Rasyiqah Khairul Anuar

Good morning, teacher

I had my first experience observing a NZ school yesterday. I have observed schools before but that was in Malaysia. In NZ, the school is different, the system is different, and so, getting to see for myself how teaching and learning is done in here was really exciting. I always knew the way they teach and learn in NZ is different from Malaysia-I just didn’t know how different it was.

First of all, I LOVE the huge classrooms! When I think about my classrooms when I was in school back then, I remembered it to be small, hot and crowded. But the school that I went to yesterday, the classrooms are huge. They are big that you can even put couches at one corner for the children to just chill. The desks are not arranged facing the blackboard, like it is in Malaysia. The children have more mobility in class; they can choose to do their work on the couch or at their desk or with a friend from the other side of the classroom. I think if Malaysian schools were like this, all you will get is a noisy classroom with no work done. The particular classroom that I was assigned to even has a flat screen TV for educational purposes which I think is really cool. The walls are decorated so beautifully with their artworks and essays and I think if I had a class like that back then, I would really look forward to go to school everyday. It’s cheerful, spacious and fun-it just feels like home.

The student-teacher relationship was also very interesting. I remembered being terribly scared of some of my teachers that I didn’t look forward to go to school back then. Sometimes, I even wished for the teachers to be sick so that I won’t have to go through ‘hell’. But the classroom that I was assigned to, the children seem to love the teacher a lot. She is fun and energetic, and always have these cool activities to keep the mood up. Even though she was not strict, they still respect her as a teacher. She still holds the power.

The way the lessons are taught however, were a bit weird. Over here, one teacher is assigned to one classroom and that teacher is in charge of everything; Math, English, Arts and even P.E! And not all the children were taught at the same phase as everyone else in the class. They basically learn at their own phase. One student could be doing page 400 while another one could still be at page 350. In some lessons, different groups would be doing different things. During literacy yesterday, there were about 5 different groups doing 5 different things! I have no idea how the teacher keeps up with what they are learning, but it seems to be working! The particular class that I was in seems to be really good at math! They have this warm up session where they have to answer 20 math questions in under 2 minutes and the fastest person who gets it all correct, wins. The record yesterday was 41 seconds for adding and subtracting, and 34 seconds for multiplication and division.

So, yeah, that was basically what I saw yesterday. I’m really glad that we were given a chance to experience seeing how schools work over here. It’s very different from Malaysia, but I think the Malaysian education system has a lot of good points too. If not, I don’t think I will even be here in NZ right now if the education system failed me. :-p

What I must remember myself when I become a teacher:

1. To set classroom expectations from the first day of class.

2. To be as fun and exciting as I can.

3. To make the classroom as comfortable as possible (this is going to be hard considering I will be sharing the classroom with at least 5 other teachers)

-----

Later that night, my girls and I had a small potluck! It’s been ages since our last potluck so it was really nice to get together like that again. Last night’s potluck was the biggest we’ve had so far. We ate 5 ½ pot of rice, 4 different lauks (Shufaiha made Kari udang, Jo made rendang ikan?, Zaty made sambal ikan bilis and I made bebola daging masak kicap) and Che Nazira made the delicious custard pudding. We finished everything last night!
